Galway club St. Gabriel’s LGFA were honoured at a ceremony in Croke Park on Saturday 9 November as one of 90 Green Clubs across Ireland taking sustainability action for the club and community. GAA President Jarlath Burns, who presented the club with their award at the event, applauded the clubs leading the sustainability charge for the GAA. “Green Clubs are reinforcing our social leadership, improving their facilities, and helping ensure a better future for their communities. The breadth of initiatives being celebrated here today, spanning energy, waste, water, biodiversity, and travel, speaks volumes about the innovative and community-focused spirit of our clubs. The diversity of these projects demonstrates how clubs are finding creative ways to address local challenges while contributing to a national movement.”
The GAA Green Club Programme, a partnership between the GAA and local authorities, was established in 2020 to support GAA, LGFA and Camogie clubs to take action across the five areas of Energy, Waste, Water, Biodiversity, Travel & Transport and is funded with support from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications.
Attendees at the event in Croke Park heard from Green Clubs from across the island who have achieved big cuts to club running costs and carbon emissions by introducing sustainable energy measures from clubhouse improvements to solar PV installation and LED upgrades. Over two thirds of Green Clubs have installed outdoor taps and drinking water stations, introduced reusable water bottles or run gear swaps to cut down on waste produced by the club and reduce spending for club members while nearly half the clubs have taken action, often with support from community partnerships and local or national grant funding, to encourage sustainable travel with the introduction of bike racks and car-pooling initiatives and the improvement of safe walking and cycling routes to clubs. The event was back dropped by images of Green Clubs who have transformed the appearance of their club grounds with pollinator friendly flower beds in club colours, biodiversity walkways for the health & well-being of club and community members and native tree planting to support local biodiversity, provide shade and shelter and reduce flood risk.
Guest speaker at the event Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin spoke of her admiration for the leadership being shown by the Green Clubs in their communities and within the GAA and of the positive legacy Green Clubs are creating for future generations. Padraig Fallon, Chair of the GAA Green Club Steering Group, referenced the GAA’s values as a driving force behind the GAA’s Green Club Programme. “Place, belonging and respect are at the heart of what the GAA is and does. The Green Clubs being celebrated here today have demonstrated how respect for and a commitment to protecting our environment helps make our clubs and communities stronger, more resilient and a better place for all.” The GAA, LGFA and Camogie Associations are inviting new clubs to apply to become Green Clubs. Applications are open from now until January for the next round of the Green Club programme. Interested clubs can apply at:
https://greenclubs.gaa.ie/
All Gaelic Games clubs can take sustainability action by using the GAA Green Club Toolkit available at https://learning.gaa.ie/GreenClub and developed in collaboration with the GAA’s Green Club Expert Partners the Climate Action Regional Offices (CAROs), the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the Waste Management Regional Offices, the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPro), Uisce Éireann, the National Biodiversity Data Centre, the National Transport Authority and the RSA.
Well done to our clubs U8 & U10 teams who finished their 2024 season off with some well deserved fun in St. Catherine’s Hall. The development of these players must be credited to their families for bringing them along to the sessions & for travelling to the fantastic Blitzes we have been invited to during the year including what is always a special event in the Connacht Centre of Excellence ‘The Dome’.
A massive THANK YOU to the fantastic & dedicated coaches/mentors who made the season possible. It is because of the commitment of these volunteers that our young players have opportunities to play football. It’s heart warming to see the friendships being formed between these young players representing many local primary schools and parishes. A round of applause for those that sponsored the season and celebrations.

Just over a week ago St. Gabriel’s welcomed the Galway U14 Connacht & All Ireland Champions to Aughrim Park as part of their club tour.
A *MASSIVE* thank you to all that came along and welcomed the team players, management and our own club player Keela Donnelly Meehan.
A very special occasion for our club and a fantastic display of support from our club & wider community.
It was an extremely momentous & special occasion for Keela and her family and all send on their warmest thanks.
“Andrew & myself as very proud parents were overwhelmed by the kindness of everyone in coming along to show their support. It was so very much appreciated.
Thanks also to those that couldn’t make it along and sent on messages.
It is heart warming to be part of such a fantastic & supportive club. Thank you!”
A huge thanks to everyone that attended the concussion workshop last Wednesday delivered by Cliona Devaney.
The information delivered was very informative, relatable and important with extremely positive feedback from attendees. Cliona has very kindly shared the *Concussion Recognition Tool* which is being made available to all our club teams.
A huge thanks of appreciation to Sharon Parr of Hares Corner. Sharon visited our facilities in Aughrim and has helped to highlight and bring our attention to the amazing array of nature & biodiversity surrounding our pitch. We are extremely fortunate to be surrounded by such an abundance of nature. We will be working alongside our community to help promote, manage and enhance this fantastic amenity.
We’ll fill you in on each step.
Step 1:
Developing a biodiversity trail and creating greater access to the area behind the dug outs.
This has begun with the help and support of Aughrim Community Employment Scheme. We are in the early stages and the walkway is rough & ready so take your time and enjoy!
St. Gabriel’s Ladies is delighted to host Cliona Devaney who will be delivering a Concussion Education Workshop.
This workshop is being rolled out across all codes (LGFA, Camogie and GAA).
All players, coaches, referees, parents and volunteers are invited to come along.
Wednesday July 24th at 8pm-9pm St. Catherine's Hall, Aughrim, Ballinasloe H53 D9F4.

The Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards 2024 were given out at the Clayton Hotel at the Cathaoirleach’s Gala Ball for County Galway recently.
St Gabriel's Ladies were delighted to be selected as being 'Highly Commended' in the Sports Awards section recognising 'voluntary efforts to increase the number of people participating in sport, particularly within groups with low participation rates'.
The Cathaoirleach Awards are an annual initiative to acknowledge the commitment of individuals and groups who participate in unpaid community and voluntary activities and the significant impact their actions have on quality of life in their communities.
Organised by Galway County Council in partnership with Galway County Public Participation Network (PPN) and hosted by Cathaoirleach Councillor Liam Carroll.
We are recognised on page 18 of the booklet.
A huge shout out to our club volunteers- team managers, mentors and committee. Volunteers are the glue that hold clubs together. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.

It was announced on Friday 29th March that the Galway Ladies Gaelic Football Association is to become one of the LGFA's designated 'Football Tester Leagues' with the adoption of an Open Age Category Division. The experimental league is to be installed this Summer for Ladies/Girls and will see players from aged 12 to adult compete on the same team in a round robin tournament in a designated 'non competitive' competition. The LGFA is looking for 'expression of interests' from all Galway registered clubs for it's inaugural 10 team division that is hoping to Throw In from Sunday 23rd June 2024. The 'Age Open' league format will see a further expansion for the possibility of mixed Mens/Boys/Ladies/Girls age open teams from 2025 onwards.

The club is seeking to fill the following:
*Fixtures Coordinator* - to assist Team Managers with coordinating pitch trainings and match schedules and helping to keep the committee updated on match fixtures.
*Team Mentor Coordinator* - to assist Team Managers with organising mentor support at trainings and matches for the players. It is important to have additional female support for the male managers of the teams.
Both positions are admin roles and all responsibilities can be fulfilled primarily by phone (calls, texts, WhatsApp).

Goalkeeper appreciation post*
They have the hardest job on the whole team. If the Team are doing well - the other players can feel like a million miles away down the pitch, while the goalie stands still getting cold and feeling lonely.
Likewise, the goal keeper is the one who feels all the pressure if a goal is conceded.
So go on show your team Goalkeeper some appreciation!
We respect & very much appreciate all our keepers here at St. Gabriel’s Ladies Football Club. Remember you are never to blame, you play as a Team. If a goal is conceded that is due to the efforts of every squad member. It will never lie on the shoulders of one player - not on our Team anyway.

That's a wrap for our 2023 u12 season. Great fun today 🟢🟡
Speaking on behalf of all our coaches and mentors we can say that all of the girls were great fun and an absolute pleasure to coach. We wish the very best to those who move up to u14 next year.
Great win for St Gabriel’s Juniors on Saturday away in Inverin. A good game of football that saw the final score end 3g & 10pts St Gabriel’s to Michael Breathnachs 6 points. Half time score was 2g & 4pts to 4pts. They have earned a place in the semi finals. Well done ladies.
My Name is Nate, I'm a paramedic and me and my family moved to Aughrim in 2022 from Australia. The village has had an Automatic External a Defibrillator (AED) outside John Burkes for a number of years which thankfully has never been used. This has recently been decommissioned because it was in need of replacement. As there is no Community First Responder group in the area I've decided to fund raise to get another defibrillator to provide this essential service to our community. The funds raised will go towards replacing the AED, replace any consumable stores required and hopefully have enough left to keep it running for a number of years until a First Responder Group can be organised. I'm happy to take responsibility for this in the long term.
For those who don't know, an Automatic External Defibrillator is a device that a First Aider attaches to a patient experiencing cardiac arrest. This device when activated, will automatically detect a patients heart rythm and if required, administer an electric shock in order to attempt to make the heart beat properly again. It is essential we have one in our community as ambulance responses times are at an old time low. Thanks for your generosity. Remember it could be you or your family that need this device one day.

🟢Player Feedback🟡
Thanks to all players for their participation.
The items outlined on the images are what were raised by the players themselves with respect to improving the dressing rooms.
Hopefully we have given an appropriate response & explanation.
Think the vending machine was a long shot😉!
One further suggestion was an outside boot scraper so we’ll get working on that 👍
It’s fantastic to have club players coming with additional feedback & suggestions to help improve our club.
Thanks for your input.
